Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can affect anyone.
They are passed on through unprotected sex in the vagina, anus or mouth or by genital skin contact and the best way to protect yourself and your partner(s) is to use a condom each time you have sex. Many people don’t notice symptoms when they have an STI but if left untreated, they can affect your health.
Common STI symptoms include:
Unusual discharge from vagina, penis and anus
Itching and stinging in the genital area
Bleeding between periods and after sex
Burning sensation when passing urine
Pain during sex
Lump/spots/blisters/sores in genital area
Pain low down in your tummy
Pain in your testicles
These symptoms don’t necessarily mean you have an STI, but it’s worth getting seen and having a chat with a clinician. If you have symptoms an examination may be required.
When to get a test
If you have any symptoms
Been informed by a sexual partner they have an STI
Have had unprotected sexual interactions with another individual
How to get a test
If you have no symptoms, you can be tested for the most common STIs on your own, rather than going to a clinic. This is called self-sampling. It can test for common STIs including Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea.
Returning your kit is easy. You can drop your kit off at the Sexual and Reproductive Health clinics within Ninewells Hospital, Dundee or Drumhar Health Centre, Perth or any NHS Tayside GP Practice.
If you have symptoms contact Tayside Sexual Health clinic to make an in-person appointment on 01382 425542 between 9am and 12pm
